We are facing down the survival of our nation, our people,
and the recognition of all of us as part of the human race,
black and white together.
Ann: Hello, Mr. President, Anita* said you would like a word.
President Lincoln: Abe, Miss Ann, Abe, because tonight I am coming to you from a very human perspective. Watching all the shenanigans that are going on with your Congress, everyone trying to out knock out everyone else and those that want that fighting to be over seem to have fallen by the wayside.
And the reason for that is ambition. Well, it’s not a four letter word so I guess it’s got that goin’ for it, but it sure can cause a train wreck when it starts to lead the stampede.
I know all about that because I had plenty of it. I wanted, really wanted to be somebody, somebody big and famous, powerful and clever where I would stand up in front of everybody and show ‘em how smart I was.
I had some success at that as I went into the practice of law largely because the things that the human family got us to never failed to make a good story, and I loved a good story because it can make anyone do anything.
Kinda followed my own story out not really paying too much mind to anything but movin’ on up, until, lo and behold, those stories took a different turn, and we were facing down the survival of our nation, our people, and the recognition of all of us as part of the human race, black and white together.
And that’s when my ambition took a big hit. No one, no one, let me repeat, would want to carry the burdens and the choices that were put on a man in the midst of a civil war. There is no way one man can make it come out right, no way that death and horror and poverty and hunger can be avoided when that happens. We had chosen to tear ourselves apart rather than live in charity with our neighbors and let those human beings we had held down for so long be recognized as our brothers.
I ask each one of you to look around you and see that it could happen again, that we are on the precipice of another war if we allow our ambition to take us over that cliff. We have the right president, and I am with him every day and every night, letting him know that our stories today are real and still powerful, that in our stories lies our humanity, that this time the stories can be used to show all of us that we are neighbors and could be friends if we would just reach out a hand to help each other.
There are many of us standing by to help and you have heard some of them come here to cheer the rest of us on. Dr. King is a particular friend of mine and is here to say he too has a message to share as these times evolve towards freedom in spite of inevitable setbacks.
And as the door is opening wider, don’t let yourselves be fooled by those who lose sight of their purpose and aim in favor of their own ambition. I did it myself so I know how it happens.
But I also saw ambition take a back seat when push came to shove and the country’s future was in the offing. Keep your eye out for these leaders, they are with us, and they are going to stand up. They may surprise you as they come to the fore in the coming days when they cannot let the moment pass them by when they could have stood on the right side of history.
There are more of them that you might imagine so keep your mind aimed hearts aimed at giving them your support. You may not think so but they can feel it and it will help them stand taller – and the rest of us too.
This, by God, is going to be a nation of laws come hell or high water and we’ve had a bit of both. Now comes truth and courage and service, and those are the values that will power our leaders for the future.
Don’t let yourselves get discouraged, the doors are opening on a wider world of freedom, and, God will, each and every one of you will be a part of it.
