Little Blue Heron Off Course In Western Massachusetts
Ann: Good morning, Miriam. Anita* says that you want to connect, and I have been feeling your energy also.
Miriam: Yes, Ann good morning, such a morning that makes me miss my time on earth, a time when the beauty of physical things, the growing things in God’s creation take full sway over any other less important matters. And everything is less important.
When you take a moment to notice, really notice the components and inhabitants of your surroundings, a world of miracles comes to life. The little blue heron that you saw last night sitting on a dead branch by the pond a little shell shocked having lost his way from the coast. Three turtles sunning themselves of a rock newly revealed courtesy of the dry weather. The dragonflies sweeping and diving, looking for food, yes, but clearly delighting in the ballet. As you watched, you began to see more clearly that your place is not at the center of the universe, that these creatures all go on without you.
No one person is essential. You, I believe, have at least sotto voce subscribed to the great man theory of history, and indeed great men – and those of the opposite stripe – can powerfully affect the tide of human events. But even they fade into the ongoing pulse of creation and recreation of the biological universe. Vine covered houses fall into ruin, treasured objects are lost to the infusion of time and the lack of regard of succeeding generations. No one man or woman can stop these eternal forces.
You mourn the loss of Jesus, of Robert Kennedy, John Lewis, Elijah Cummings, and others like them and regret the course of history that they could have directed. And yet, this course has a pulse and rhythm all of its own.
In their loss is born the prominence and power of their ideals. Witness the power of the death of George Floyd. This is how lasting change is made, changes evolving from a groundswell.
And all the while, the forces of nature continue unabated, unimpressed by human turmoil until more than one little blue heron is thrown off course, more than one arid landscape is set on fire. Then gradually, gradually the planet will respond to rebalance.
Tie yourself to the smallest of our natural communities and follow their lead. Draw sustenance from their acquiescence and adjustability. The world is changing, we must change with it. Nature in all its complexities can direct our mindset, constructive but not rigid, adjusting and not looking back, protecting and preserving what we can, acquiescing to what we cannot affect, and engaging our full souls, psyches, and material selves to the shepherding of these changes so that will become pleasant in the eyes of the Lord.
Each one of us is a force affecting the direction of the whole. Do not wait for the great man, the great leader to emergy. Power is in your hands, each one of you. I beg that you use it and use it wisely.
