Mary Magdalene: Yes, yes, I do. What a glory is friendship! Friendship, the bond with no boundaries except those that make for healthy preservation of essential space, integrity, and respect. We two know the meaning of the word, for we have both given and received friendship - and have squandered opportunities for same, sad to say.
What a blessing to know that what we say to a friend will be received, not with compliance, but with acceptance and an openness to understanding. With a friend we need not censor our output, we need not worry that what we say will be too intimate, too dark or too grand, for our friends give us a listening ear and an accepting presence – albeit one which tolerates no bullshit. And the beauty of it is that each returns the favor to the other.
For friendship is never just about me. I am part of a small community of two or more where the welfare of one is the welfare of the other. Yet a friend doesn’t reach out to control or to smother with other with opinions and directions. A friend carries the well-being of the other in their heart but knows that each has their own path, and knows further that when pitfalls loom, when the wrong road is inevitably taken, each will still be there, still accepting, listening, laughing at absurdities, and entertaining us by playing back alternate scenarios each of which is more disastrous or hilarious than the next.
For friendship is never grim. Who wants to spend time with a sad sack? We share our troubles, our fears, and our failures and sometimes our successes, yes, but in the context of a mutuality of joy and lightheartedness, for we know that the heart of friendship is its synthesis of universal love in the bad joke of human experience. Our essences are never defined by our human limitations so friends communicate on a cosmic as well as human level.
And friendship is never lost, as you well know. Goodnight and God bless, my friend.
